In three words. Yes and no. Yeah, I know you wanted something more definitive. But the truth of the matter is that it's really a mixed bag. Some of the people you might meet are RL, some are not and claim to be, and some are online only. Some of what you see and read is factual, some the figment of another's fantasy and imagination.
Thankfully, God gave us a great tool to deal with the unknown. It's called reasoning. We can pick through the garbage and find what works for us individually. Does it really matter if some people are into beastiality? If you're not, what does it matter. Do Gorean communities really exist? Unless you have a particular interest in living a Gorean lifestyle, who cares? Other than for curiosity's sake, you're not going to try it anyway if it's not your cup of tea.
The only real danger in the blurring of lines between fact and fantasy is when it comes to information about the lifestyle that may be put into practice in RL. About meeting safely, and what is acceptable behavior.
The bottom line in all of your life is that ultimately, you are the only one that is responsible for your safety and education. If what you see doesn't make sense to you, or if you have questions about it, do some research. Find some of the "legitimate" D/s lifestyle websites and read. Seek out trusted friends and ask questions. There are no disclaimers on the trash that is thrown about online, so always be an inquisitive student.
And that misinformation is not relegated to online. You can find it in RL as well. Anywhere that someone is spouting off about a subject in which they have no personal experience you will find the potential for danger. That is, if you accept it at face value and without question. Remember, there are two kinds of fools. One that learns from no one, and one that learns from everyone. Don't be foolish and believe everything you hear, or nothing. Be discriminating and you'll be fine.
